Early Laser Burn Test on Moosehide The First Laser Burn The very first laser burn testing on genuine moosehide leather. While the intricate crest details were beautiful, this initial method proved too difficult and slow for full-scale production, sparking the team's drive to innovate with printing and eventually zinc plates.

In 2015, a unique vision was taking shape on the West Coast of Canada. Sean Dupuis, looking to bring authentic meaning to his footwear, was searching for an Indigenous artist interested in designing the vamps of what would soon become Spirit Moccasins. Coincidentally, renowned Tsimshian artist Bill Helin was looking for someone in the moccasin business to collaborate with.

Through Strong Nations Book Publishing in Nanaimo, BC, the two were introduced. Realizing they shared the exact same vision, they immediately set up a meeting. Sean travelled to Bill's house in Parksville, BC, to discuss their ideas and review Bill's extraordinary portfolio to see what would translate best to leather. Utilizing the Tsimshian life crests, the Life Spirit Moccasins were born.

There are 18 Tsimshian life crests in total, and to get the project started, the Hummingbird and the Frog were chosen as the first designs to be made. The immediate challenge was figuring out how to apply these intricate designs to genuine leather.

While laser engraving was the first idea, the technology was just developing at the time and proved difficult. Sean decided to go the route of printing the leather. With the help of Mike from Top Drawer Printing, they underwent several applications and trials. Finally, they found the perfect ink and curing process. The first run of moccasins was made—and they completely sold out within weeks. That is how Spirit Moccasins truly came to life.

Fast forward 10 years later, and innovation continues. A new process utilizing zinc plates is making the project easier and far more authentic, allowing for a beautiful, rich branding of the hides that honors the original artwork.

The Meaning of the Frog

"The Frog is the voice of the people, especially in our family. He strives for family unity, is one who teaches by example and is sometimes a symbol of innocence. The frog is more 'us' and 'we' and less 'I'."

Cozy Options Available with soft fleece lining options and tapestry insoles to provide extra warmth and coziness throughout the colder Canadian months.
The Science of Grounding These moccasins come with either a natural gum rubber formed sole or a gum rubber ski sole. Crucially, this allows for grounding (or earthing). Unlike manufactured lineman boots which have insulating properties that inhibit the conductivity of electrical currents, the natural gum rubber on Spirit Moccasins allows you to stay physically connected to the earth's natural energy.
