About Bill Helin:
Bill Helin is a renowned Canadian Indigenous artist from British Columbia, belonging to the Tsimshian First Nation. Born and raised in the Northwest coastal community of Prince Rupert, Bill's artistic talents encompass a wide range of mediums, including painting, wood carving, engraving, jewelry design, and illustration.
His work is deeply rooted in the traditions and legends of his ancestors, bringing to life the rich cultural heritage of the Tsimshian people. Bill's artistic journey began at a young age, inspired by the stories and teachings of his grandmother. He honed his skills through self-study, books, and formal training at K'San, a well-known Indigenous carving school in Hazelton, BC. He also studied at the Gemology Institute of America in California, further expanding his expertise in jewelry design and gem setting.
Bill's artistic contributions have garnered international recognition. Notably, he designed patches worn by Canadian astronauts on space shuttle missions, including those for Dr. Robert Thirsk's missions to the International Space Station. His work has also been featured in numerous publications, including illustrations for books by his cousin, author Calvin Helin, and over 110 books for Strong Nations Publishers.
In addition to his artistic pursuits, Bill is a respected cultural ambassador, sharing his knowledge of Tsimshian traditions through storytelling, drumming, and singing. He has also undertaken significant projects, such as carving a 40-foot dugout canoe and contributing to the world's tallest totem pole.
